Interests: I'm interested in Lilah becoming more of a moral person and beginning to buy into the big picture of the Inquisition rather than just being there because it impacts on her personally. If there's anything down the line with regard to Orzammar I'd love for her to be a part of that, as Dwarven society and politics fascinates me and Lilah would be simultaneously an asset and a liability. Adjusting to living on the surface is also something I'd like to play out, as is experiencing the camaraderie of the Inquisition and feeling as though she's really gaining friends she can trust. It'd be cool if she could find out why her House were made casteless, too.

CHARACTER

Name: Lilah Rodic

Race: Dwarf
Nationality: Orzammar
Occupation: Carta henchman
Age: 25

History

House Rodic were stripped of their caste at least two hundred years ago, for reasons unknown to all but the Shaperate. Living in Dust Town, few options were available to Lilah, and the Carta was a more palatable choice than prostitution or begging. However by the time Lilah joined in her late teens, the Carta's operation in Orzammar had been almost obliterated by the Warden, much of the operation moving to the surface, particularly in the Free Marches, while they're struggling to keep the Orzammar operation going. Lilah finds herself entering an organisation that's a shadow of its former self, and continually hearing about how good things once were compared to the small, disappointing Orzammar operation now only makes her need to prove herself grow, as even her best option in life is in a limited, failing organisation.

Lilah starts out as a message runner and look out, and over time is given more responsibility, taking charge of large amounts of money and lyrium in transactions and acting as an enforcer to send people a message the hard way. She's journeyed to the surface a couple of times during important deals in the Free Marches, but most of her time is spent underground. In what free time she has, she goes on excursions into the closer parts of the Deep Roads looking for treasure (and whatever remains of her own Thaig), selling her findings with the Carta taking a cut of the profits and becoming an accomplished marksman, using her crossbow on giant spiders, darkspawn and deepstalkers.

When news reached Orzammar of the Conclave, Lilah was among those chosen by the Carta to go and spy on the proceedings, knowing that the outcome would affect the lyrium market. Many of the other dwarves are killed in the explosion at the Conclave, Lilah comes round to find a green, glowing splinter embedded in her palm. When she makes the connection between her palm and the breach, she runs away back to Orzammar as fast as she can. She tries to keep her head down and stay hidden, but it doesn't take long for news of the Inquisitor to spread. When Lilah's bosses realise she's got a physical connection to the breach they decide that she's too big a liability to keep around. Her former Carta enforcer team overpowers her, knocks her out and takes her to the surface, then pays a band of human mercenaries to deliver her to the Inquisition, so that they can deal with the problem.

Personality

Lilah often outwardly appears very confident, sometimes to the point of cockiness, but this is a front she puts on, to hide her own insecurities and to survive in the cut throat world of the Carta. She's very aware of her own strengths and weaknesses, and does her best to stick to those more experienced than her so that responsibility falls on them rather than her. She doesn't like being in charge or having to make important decisions that will affect the lives of other people, and will try to worm her way out of this through any means necessary, no matter how underhanded. Deep down she feels a deep sense of inadequacy and need to prove herself, something she tries to ignore but which always manages to resurface, and she'll try to avoid that with cocky bravado.

She's naturally opportunistic, something that comes with having grown up in Dust Town, knowing she needs to grab what she can for herself while it's available, or she'll be left to starve. She'll always choose the risky option if it offers bigger rewards, reasoning that she can't be any worse off than she already is. This has led her to be in life-threatening situations a handful of times, but she's always managed to improvise her way out. She passes these off as entertaining stories later on, embellishing a lot of the details.

Lilah's the sort of person who likes to have her finger in a lot of pies, and would like to consider herself an entrepreneur. Her plans often fall flat, as she doesn't have much in the way of business sense and often invests in shady products/partners, but she enjoys the sense of respect and making something of herself in her own right rather than just as a yes-man for the Carta.

Lilah would balk at thinking of herself as a moral person, thinking that it will damage her reputation (and she likes to think of herself as having a far bigger reputation than she actually does), but she does have some standards that she is unwilling to compromise. She's refused outright to carry out orders to 'send a message' when she realises it would involve brutally beating an unarmed elderly man (even though he was a rich jerk), and she's given up her share of gold from a venture to help an orphanage (though she swore she'd burn said orphanage down if word got out). With the Inquisition she will be forced to put herself in a bigger picture mindset far more, even if she will continue to say that she's only there because of the sliver of the Anchor lodged in her hand, but secretly she's very much enjoying the opportunity to be a part of something big and to make a difference.

Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Dwarf abilities: Stone sense (ability to detect lyrium and to navigate underground); higher resistance to magic; hardy constitution; unable to dream/enter the Fade naturally; sterile due to close proximity to Deep Roads

    ✔ Excellent marksman
✔ Silver tongued; good at negotiating and at talking her way out of trouble
✔ Carta connections, can be a source of lyrium and of shadier sources of information etc.

× Not good at taking responsibility for her own actions
× She's dwarf height, therefore Skyhold isn't really designed with her in mind; this will also go against her in close combat with anyone but other dwarves
× Used to looking out for her own interests and unlikely to adapt from that quickly (she'll probably run away the first time things get really bad, and will try to weasel out of things)

    Inventory

A couple of changes of clothes, a bow and arrows, a couple of bottles of dwarven ale, a small amount of gold

    Motivation

She's got a sliver of the Anchor embedded in her hand, and she'd really like the Inquisition to remove that if at all possible. Until then, she figures she's probably safest with them.
